  • In recent years, many of Britain’s finest galleries and museums have increased their group visitors by introducing a choice of themed tours, talks and exhibitions. Groups are often able to book out of hours visits, behind-thescenes tours and introductory talks. It would be impossible to mention every museum in Britain, so the following is a selection of what’s available which are suitable for groups.

    A Mix of Museums

Many of Britain’s national museums and galleries are located in London.Housing a priceless collection of man-made objects from all over the world, the British Museum is a must for visitors to London. Treasures such as the Elgin Marbles and the Amaravati sculpture are on display, and for groups of 10 or more, the Highlights Tour is a good way to cover the major exhibits. Another important collection in the capital is the British Library, known for its national treasures such as the Lindisfarne Gospels and Magna
Carta. Groups can choose from two audio guides, an Architectural Tour of the building or the Treasures Tour, and for prebooked groups, a personal guided tour can be arranged.

    A Good Sport

The architectural design of the River and Rowing Museum at Henley is impressive, raised on columns above water meadows beside the Thames and built of exposed concrete and glass. Three main galleries feature the River Thames, the sport of rowing
    and the town of Henley.

    Military Might

The Imperial War Museum London is excellent in its coverage of conflicts,
especially those involving Britain and the Commonwealth.Exhibits range from tanks and aircraft to photographs and personal letters and include film and sound recordings. To appreciate the vast collection of British art from 1500 to the present at Tate Britain, a private tour is recommended. Lasting one hour, a choice of tours is available and can
be combined with a meal package if required. A private tour is also the best way to get the most out of a visit to Tate Modern. Daytime Private Tours highlight key works from one of four display themes: the nude, landscape, still life or history painting.A Special Tour takes place before the gallery is open to the public and is followed by a breakfast of pastries and exotic fruit, while Friday and Saturday evening tours include a tour of the permanent collection or an architectural tour followed by dinner.Groups can arrange to visit both museums on a Tate to Tate Tour which includes a highlights tour of the permanent collection of Tate Britain, a boat trip along the Thames and a tour at Tate Modern.
